As care providers, where did we go wrong? Did we orient the family? Did we find out how much they know about their loved one’s illness? Did we provide resources? Did we meet with them often enough? Did we provide access to a support group?
We will discuss the need for a complete orientation of our memory care units for the families of our residents. “Orientation” should include, but not be limited to, the progression of the disease process with emphasis on the top 5 dementias, specific outcomes of the dementia experienced by their loved one, resources (The 36-Hour Day), ADEAR, and the Alzheimer’s Association.
What support can we provide in-house to make this journey easier for all concerned?
Objectives
- Ability to reassess or create a family orientation for those with loved ones with dementia or in Memory Care
- Understand what information families know/need about dementia.
- Provide families with realistic expectations, eliminating confrontations.
- Identify ways to head off patient and family dissatisfaction.
